Job Title: Kayak business operator for May 10th to June 25th, 2012.

Qualifications: must have past guiding experience, preferably level one day guide or better.

Job description:

1) Schedule bookings for rentals, guiding, and tours.

2) Rentals: ensure waivers are signed, provide equipment safety demonstration, collect payment, and clean and put away equipment.

3) Guiding: ensure waivers are signed, provide equipment safety demonstration, look after clients needs, collect payment, and clean and put away equipment.

4) Lessons(optional): lessons are generally a small part of the business (10%). If you have Paddle Canada level one certification or better, you may teach the lessons http://www.apaddleinthepark.com/lessons/ Otherwise, please take bookings for when we return

Compensation: 40% of gross sales plus tips. Last year over that time we had approximately $5,000 in sales from one to two tours/rentals (groups) per week. With the proposed formula, compensation is anticipated to be about $2,000 plus tips.

Time commitment is very weather dependent and the business offers a great deal of flexibility. There would be opportunity for on call guiding after June 25th.

There is a rescue lesson going on starting at noon. If you ever wanted to learn how to get back into a kayak after you fall out, this is a good time. We will be doing both a self and assisted rescues.

I have a rule when kayaking that if you flip the kayak and i have to rescue you, You owe me a box of chocolates. With Chris is is a six pack of beer.

I was so close to to a box of chocolates today , I could almost taste it. I was taking two young fellows out on our two hour paddle. We had stopped to watch the seals sun tanning on an islet. I hear splash look over to see the kyook kayak on edge and the paddler half in the water. Thankfully the kyook is hard to flip and he manged to get him self up right and find his paddle. Apart from cold hands he was fine for the rest of the tour.

I did get a Kinder egg at the end of  the tour . he almost fell in and i got and almost box of chocolates.

Saw a you tube where an otter comes up to a kayaker. they are  shy around here. They do follow and watch us but never that close

Just came back from a web site workshop. Apparently adding content and updating you site keeps you higher on Googles’ list. I need to find something interesting to blog about so you can find our site. If any one out there reading this has a good kayaking related story please let me know so i can post it.

Yesterday Melissa took a lady named Sophie who is blind out kayaking. She is from Paris, France and is doing a documentary for a European public broadcasting company named Arte, where she travels around the world with her faithful guide dog, Pongo, having adventures. As you can imagine the logistics with 2 camera men, a sound guy and a director, all of them in kayaks. I think it was an adventure for all. They had Melissa and Sophie mic-ed so they recorded everything they said. I paddled one of the camera guys around. We were out on the water for 5 hours. We went along a rock face where Sophie was able to pick up and feel a star fish. Pongo thought it might be tasty. She was able to feel the seaweed and there was a crab on the end she was able to hold. We were so close to the swans that she could hear them. We stopped at an island where Pongo just ran around sniffing everything. He wasn’t too pleased when he had to get back into the kayak.

I told the camera guy there were seals on the rocks. It took him a while to actually see them, they blend in so well. They really enjoyed the bald eagle.

The crew flew into Vancouver and then took the ferry over to Victoria. So far they are very impressed with Canada and of course find us very friendly and accommodating.

They are heading up island today to go through the rain forest and see (feel) the big trees and listen to the birds and just nature. They are going to a salmon hatchery where she will tag a salmon.

I don’t know if we will ever be able to see this documentary, they are going to try to send us a link, but our European friends will be able to see it.

Got to love Eddy! He has proposed some wonderful new trip concepts. The concepts have yet to be approved, but as long as you don’t tell.

They both involve the new Brentwood Bay launch site. The fist one involves a paddle to the world famous Buchart Gardens as well as a front row seat in your kayak for the fireworks.

The second is a sport and culture tour. We will paddle with an eye to the first nations heritage of the island. Thr highlight will be attendance at a first nation event.
